When they realized that they would not be able to cross the Dardanelles, the Allied Powers, aiming to reach the strait from there by landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force Commander Sir Ian Hamilton and his delegation carried out a reconnaissance in the Gallipoli peninsula. After witnessing the defeat in the Naval Battle of March 18, 1915, they decided that a land military operation was necessary to complete the Gallipoli Campaign. They withdrew on the morning of April 26 as a result of the 25th and 26th Regiments putting pressure on the British.
