Canterbury Cemetery

Audio Guide

The Canterbury Cemetery, located to the east of the Arıburnu Road on Walker’s Ridge, was created by the transfer of single graves and merger of them with the other graves around after 1919. The name of the cemetery is derived from the Canterbury Battalion, since 22 of the soldiers interred here were attached to it. The area of the cemetery was used as a zone of operations for New Zealand during the course of the war. The rectangular-shaped cemetery is surrounded by the sea and measures 12 m by 23 m, with an area of 276 m². Five rows of graves are found in the cemetery composed of two plots. Apart from the 22 confirmed New Zealanders, there are 4 soldiers believed to be New Zealanders (although their identity is not known) and 1 unknown solider interred at the cemetery.
