Doughty-Wylie Grave

Old Castle / Doughty Wylie Hill (Hill 141) is one of the major high points with respect to its position. It is located at a strategic position for defense with a frontal view of the V Beach. The 26th Regiment defending the Sedd el Bahr Front, the last stand of the 3rd battalion and military headquarters were located on this hill. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Doughty Wylie died during the assault to capture the Hill 159 defended by Sergeant Yahya of Ezine. Following his death, Wylie was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) Medal and on April 26, 1915 he was interred at the Old Castle where he had been killed by a sniper. The following is his epitaph Lieut. Colonel C.H.M. Doughty Wylie V.C., C.B., C.M.G Royal Welsh Fusiliers 26th April 1915. Wylie was also known as the “commander not using weapons”. His grave is the only individual grave of the Allies in Gallipoli.
