Embarkation Pier Cemetery

Audio Guide

Embarkation Pier Cemetery is located at the mouth of Çatlak Dere (Creek) to the west of Anzac-Suvla Road and on the plain between the sea and Çatlak Tepe (No.2 Post). The cemetery also marks the northern border of the Anzac combat zone, and takes its name from the pier built during the night of August 6 for the embarkation of the wounded from the Battle of Satıbayır (The August Offensive). No remains of the pier survive to the present day, as it was abandoned within two days.

The individual graves of soldiers from the No. 1 and 2 Çatlak Dere (No.2 Post), Mulberry Tree, and Apex Cemeteries were brought to this cemetery which was built after 1919. This greenest and most attractive cemetery of the peninsula is rectangular in shape with dimensions of 76 x 34 m and an area of 2,584 m².

Interred at the cemetery are 662 unknown soldiers of unknown assignment, as well as 13 New Zealand and 7 Australian soldiers. The 118 Australian, 5 New Zealand and 93 British soldiers known or believed to be buried at unidentified graves are commemorated with special memorials.

An example of the image of the Turkish soldier in the minds of the Australians: The letter of Private Tommy

“I am amidst a hard-fought battle. The Turkish soldiers whom we once mocked and called Abdul, the Fatty are now fighting stalwartly. Let alone mockery, we may only show respect to them now. ....They are trying to do their best. There are always Turks who drew a line to our intents.... We are astonished by their unexpected defiance. The sick man of the east is no longer on a deathbed and now is so murderous. No matter how miraculous is such a reinvigoration, they will no longer resist and will absolutely be defeated. The victory is ours. I do not know the Turks very well. I do not know what happens if they keep me a captive. People speak negative words on that.....They say ‘throw yourselves to the lions, but never surrender to them. I think they are faithful determined and hopeful. Because, they always cry Allah Allah... Many things I do not know here....Turks are a great riddle to me....But soon I will solve this riddle.”
