Green Hill Cemetery

Audio Guide

Green Hill (Mestantepe) Cemetery offers a nice view of Suvla Bay and shade trees. The cemetery was created in 1919 by the merger of individual and regional graves (York: 40th Brigade Nos. 1 and 2; Green Hill Nos. 1 and 2; Chocolate Hill; Inniskilling; Salt Lake; and Scimitar Hill) of 1915.

The Chocolate and Green Hills on the eastern shore of Salt Lake (Lake Tuz) were given these names due to their color, and were captured by the 6th Lincolns and 6th Borders in the evening of August 7. The Battle of Scimitar Hill (known in official Turkish history as the Second Anafartalar), the last great offensive of the Dardanelles Campaign, was launched to surpass Green Hill and ended in failure. The cemetery was created in 1919 by the merger of the individual graves and graves in the region from the battles of August 1915. There are 2971 soldiers buried at the cemetery: 772 British, 2 New foundlanders, 1 Indian and 2,169 unknown soldiers. The cemetery also includes 2,472 unknown graves as well as the megaliths erected for 117 British soldiers believed to have been buried here.
