The Nek Cemetery

Audio Guide

The mountain pass of 30 m formed by the deep cut of the southern end of Baby 700 by Monash Valley (eastern edge of Korku Creek) and Malone’s Gully is known as “The Nek” (Jessaret Tepe). It is speculated that the area took its name from its position, because it appears to be a narrow pass linking Baby 700 and Russel’s Top. Alternatively, the word “Nek” means “mountain pass” or “crevice” in the Afrikaans language. This location resembles a region of the Boer War.

The cemetery, constructed in 1919, contains 326 graves of which only 5 are identified. and monuments were erected in memory of the 5 soldiers believed to lie here. The rest of the soldiers are unknown. It is presumed that the unknown soldiers were from the 8th and Light Horse Regiment and were killed on August 7
