Captain Mehmet Martyrs’ Cemetery

Audio Guide
Virtual Trip

This cemetery is located at the south end of Quinn’s Post and on the right side of the Road before arriving at the cemetery of the 57th Regiment. It is located in an area known as “the Nek” across from Quinn’s Post Cemetery. An encircled grave of 40 m2 is situated at the center of the rectangular-shaped cemetery. Previously, the cemetery was surrounded by cypress trees before a fire in 1994. It is known that Captain Mehmet of the Turkish Army was interred here. While being martyred during the Battles of Arıburnu, Captain Mehmet killed one enemy officer and two of the officers’ bodies were found embracing one another. The epitaph “27th Regiment Captain Mehmet-1915” marks the spot where Captain Mehmet was both martyred and interred. The cemetery’s construction date is unknown.
