The Behind Mortar Ridge Valley can be accessed via the stone-block staircase to the left of the grave of Lieutenant Colonel Hüseyin Avni Bey. This location is the 19th Division Front situated on Fundalık Sırtı to the east of the Çataldere at Arıburnu, one of the main fronts of the Dardanelles Campaign. The 2nd and 5th Divisions fought in this region during the assault of May 1915. This Martyrs Cemetery is the place where the soldiers were martyred from April 25 to December 1915 as well as the wounded martyred at the dressing stations, are interred. Turkish soldiers who were martyred at the ditches dug during the Armistice of May 24, 1915 are interred in this valley. The martyrs of the 1st, 5th, 6th, 27th and 57th Regiments are also interred in this cemetery, as well as 2,835 unknown martyrs. The memorial was built in 2006 by the Turkish Ministry of the Environment and Forestry in memory of the soldiers of the 1st, 5th, 6th, 27th and 57th Regiments who fought in this region.
