Damakçıl or (Damakçılık) is located between the Kayacık and Ağıl Creeks close to the intersection of the Kabatepe-Büyük Anafarta coast road and the road coming from Hill 971. It served as an intermediate target to ensure access of the attacking forces to Hill 971. Hence, Damakjelik Bair/Spur witnessed the Battles of 1st Suvla Bay (August 9) and Hill 60 (August 27) to capture or hold Hill 971. During these battles, British forces suffered heavy casualties of between 4-5,000, whereas approximately 2,350 soldiers of the 7th Division were martyred.
The following is inscribed on the stone marker of the memorial (designed by the Architect Ahmet Gülgönen) erected at the northwest end of the Damakjelik Bair/ Spur:
“Colonel Mustafa Kemal, Commander of Anafartalar Group deployed the 7th Division to attack Damakçıl Bair and thus avoided a potential cooperation with the Anzac Corps and a probable danger to Hill 971.”
