Virtual Trip

The Kemalyeri Monolith is situated at the location of Kemalyeri that can be accessed via a narrow road located 1.5 km south of Chunuk Bair and following Su Yatagha and Silah Sırtı. This memorial was designed by the Architect Ahmet Gülgönen.

The 19th Division Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal, established the headquarters of the war on the night of April 25, 1915 and commanded his troops from here until May 17, 1915.

On May 10, 1915, the then chief of staff of the 3rd Army Corps, Colonel Fahrettin (Altay) Bey, asked Mustafa Kemal (who was at that time conducting a map and terrain study in a foxhole) what he was doing in the region. Mustafa Kemal responded that he was studying the area and searching for its name. Fahrettin Bey replied that the region would thereinafter be called Kemalyeri” (Scrubby Knoll) and thus the region was named.

The 5th paragraph of the order given by Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal to his troops at 19:00 on May 3, 1915 is inscribed on the memorial:

“All soldiers fighting with us here must realize that to completely carry out the honorable duty entrusted to us there must not be one step towards the rear. Let me remind you all that your desire to sleep and rest does not merely that you are deprived of your rest, but may lead to our whole nation being similarly deprived for all eternity”

A telegram of April 30th, 1915 sent by the Commander of 3rd Army Corps to 19th Division appreciating the successful battles
“A silver medal of distinction was sent to you on behalf of the Ottoman King as an appreciation of your self-sacrificing and diligent work. I cordially congratulate you on your success and hope that your self-sacrificing services will be maintained in the course of the war which incessantly continues during the day and the night. Please notify us the names of your officers and soldiers deserved to receive medals of distinction and legion of merit”

Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK in the memoirs of Liman Von Sanders:
“That night I ceded the command of the entire troops in Anafartalar region, to Mustafa Kemal Bey, the Commander of the 19th Division deployed on the north spot of the Arıburnu Front.
Having achieved the early military victories in Italo-Turkish War, Mustafa Kemal was a leader who enjoyed assuming responsibilities. Taking an initiative on the morning of April 25th, he rebuffed the advancing enemy troops back to the shore and maintained the Arıburnu Front for three months by persistently and inflexibly withstanding the entire attacks. I had complete faith in his energy.

On the morning of August 9th, he took the command of the assault which was previously ordered for three times against the two sides of the Azmak Creek and rebuffed the enemy on certain spots back to the shore. Yet, Chocolate Hill was still kept by the enemy. It was not possible to compensate for the wasted 24 hours. In the meantime, a remarkable number of British forces landed on the shore.

…At early hours of August 10th, with the reinforcements of the Southern Group, Mustafa Kemal, personally led an assault against the British Infantry at Hill 971 and Chunuk Bair and rebuffed them from the northern ridges back. It was thus confirmed that this dominant mountain would be kept by the Turks.”
