Küçük Arıburnu and 27th Regiment Monolit

Audio Guide

This is located on the left side of the coastal road of Arıburnu. The Anzac troops landing on April 25 faced a small Turkish squad from the 27th Regiment 8th Battalion during the early hours of the day. This monolith was erected in memory of this squad that heroically defended this location. The following is inscribed on the monolith: “The first wave of the 1500 men of Anzac Corps coming ashore at Arıburnu on the morning of 25 April 1915 suffered heavy losses at the hands of a squadron of the 8th Battalion of the 27th Infantry Regiment; and took shelter at steep slopes by the shore’’ As the number of Allied soldiers landing in the early hours of the day increased, the 27th Regiment could no longer withstand the enemy troops. As the two battalions (1st and 3rd battalions) of the 27th Regiment that were held in reserve at Zeytinlik joined the battle and the 57th Regiment was deployed to the front, the Anzac Corps suffered several casualties.
