During the Great Fire of Arıburnu that occurred on July 25, 1994 and lasted for 57 hours, 4,049 hectares of forest land burned at Arıburnu and Chunuk Bair; the most intensive fronts of the Battle of the Dardanelles. The agricultural lands of the Villages of Bigalı, Büyük Anafarta, Kocadere, Kumköy and Yalova were severely damaged. The Regional Forestry Director of the time, Talat Göktepe, lost his life during the efforts to extin guish the fire. The Memorial erected on the roadside before arriving at Chunuk Bair contains the bronze statue of Regional Forestry Talat Göktepe, and represents his efforts to extinguish the fire and save the forests.
