''BARRIER-FREE ACCESSIBILITY TO HISTORY'' EDES (SUPPORT FOR THE DISABLED) PROJECT

20 June 2023 12:00

Our project aims to contribute to the development of sensitivity and awareness regarding disabled people within the scope of the "Disabled Support" Program of the General Directorate of Disabled and Elderly Services of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Within the scope of the project, awareness and sensitivity training and social integration activities have been carried out with visually and auditory disabled individuals, their families, Historical Site Guides and all personnel of our Directorate at the Çanakkale Historical Site. First of all, our main goal is to ensure that disabled individuals can access history without any obstacles. Considering that not every individual has enough budget to visit the Historical Site and that the cost of travelling here with a sign language interpreter and companion is high, various works have been carried out within the scope of this project, which is an exemplary pilot application. In this context, some of our introductory videos have been made accessible to more disabled individuals through the use of sign language interpreters, Braille alphabet embossing techniques and audio books. Thus, our disabled target audience has been included in social life and communication, and awareness with the non-disabled target audience has been increased. In this context, training workshops and social integration activities has been held. Within the investment program of our Directorate, a barrier-free museum for visually and physically disabled people has been designed in the Rumeli Mecidiye Redoubt, located in the Historical Site. It is aimed to provide infrastructure and superstructure requirements within the Redoubt that can be visited by all segments of the society. This museum is a disabled-friendly history museum that serves by presenting the experiences, effects and reflections of the Gallipoli Battles within the history of Turkey and the history of the city of Çanakkale with chronological and thematic approaches, aiming to reach the society with accurate and unbiased information, by contributing to public education and appealing to all segments of society. In Kilitbahir Fortress Museum, a barrier-free museum approach has been implemented using an interactive narrative for visually and physically disabled people and information panels designed with Braille alphabet. Again, project applications for disabled people have been implemented in Seddülbahir Fortress. As the Directorate, we are working to bring every segment of the society together with the Barrier-Free Historical Site by increasing our work after the project is completed, as promised, in line with the principle of equality of Barrier-Free Access to History, and ensuring continuity with local ownership.
