CAMBURNU (KAKAVAN) BASTION

Audio Guide

Kakavan Bastion is located on the 133-altitude Kakavan Hill in the Camburnu district of Eceabat district. The Ottoman Empire attached great importance to the defense of the Dardanelles for the security of Istanbul. For this reason, during the reign of Abdulhamid II, who was particularly interested in the fortification of the Dardanelles, many defense structures were built on the opposite shores of the Bosphorus. It is believed that many bastions dominating the Bosphorus, such as Camburnu Kakavan Bastion, Canakliktepe, Goncasuyu, Yaniktepe, Palazbaba, Kilye Poyraz, Kilye Lodos, Nara Baba, Maltepe and Rumeli Yildiz bastions, which are structurally similar to each other, were built by Abdulhamid II during this period. One of these, Camburnu Kakavan Bastion, is located on Kakavan Hill with an altitude of 133 meters and was built between 1888-1889. The bastion consists of a single bonnet and a cannon platform in front of it.
