Johnston’s Jolly Cemetery

Audio Guide

It is known that the name of the cemetery located on the right of the road to Chunuk Bair was given by then Col. G.C. Johnston, a Brigadier General of the Australian Artillery.

Undefended for a certain period during the landing operation of April 25, 1915, Johnston’s Jolly was captured by a battalion of the 27th Regiment and 72nd Regiment of the Turkish Forces. The no man’s land between the trenches of the two sides on Johnston’s Jolly was one of the cemeteries built by the British (CWGC) between 1918 and 1923. In total, 181 soldiers, (39 Australians, 1 New Zealander, and 141 unknown soldiers) were interred and 37 epitaphs are situated in the cemetery. Trenches around the cemetery remaining from the battle can be visited.
