Virtual Trip

Chunuk Bair Mehmetçik Monoliths are located on the west of the road from Russel’s Top, Baby 700 and Battleship Hill to Çimentepe. The monoliths are in the form of five monoliths symbolizing a hand. The following is inscribed on the monoliths:

1st Monolith: Informed of the landing of the enemy forces at Arıburnu on April 25, 1915, the Commander of the 19th Infantry Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, took the initiative and deployed the 57th Infantry Regiment to the region; and also had the regiment to take their positions, coming for help within the time gained by the bayonet attack initiated, under his order, by a few number of privates who ran out of ammunition and lined the shore; and thus he succeeded in halting the enemy’s advance before they reached Chunuk Bair.

2nd Monolith: Starting the assault, on the morning of April 25, 1915, against the enemy advancing toward Chunuk Bair, Mustafa Kemal gave the following order: “Men, I am not ordering you to attack. I am ordering you to die. In the time that it takes us to die, other forces and commanders can come and take our place”. Rearing up in enthusiasm, the Mehmetçik (Turkish soldiers) reclaimed Jessaret Tepe through an assault under the mass of fire from the enemy.

3rd Monolith:The enemy forces in Arıburnu were stronger as they were reinforced by other troops and attacked at Chunuk Bair on August 6, 1915. Both sides suffered heavy losses during the bloody combat that lasted day and night; and the Turkish forces stopped the enemy at a distance of 25 m to the hills of Chunuk Bair on August 9, 1915.

4th Monolith: On the morning of August 10, 1915, the Turkish counterattack started with a bayonet attack due to the fact that the trenches were very close to one another. Not leaving the observation post at the battles of Chunuk Bair that turned to hell under a mass shelling by the enemy, the pocket watch of Lieutenant Mustafa Kemal, Group Commander of Anafartalar, was severely damaged due to shrapnel, saving his life in the process, and the enemy was forced to retreat to Ağıldere (Aghyl dere) following the attack.

5th Monolith:The continued efforts of enemy forces to capture Chunuk Bair (the major peak in the Gallipoli Peninsula) failed due to the heroic and diligent defense of Turkish soldiers. The combats that occurred in this area ended with the martyring of 9.200 Turks and the killing of 12.000 enemy soldiers.

The inscriptions were designed by Architect Ahmet Gülgönen, whose 1970 competition-winning designs were built by the Turkish Government.

On November 14, 1980, the monoliths were registered as cultural heritage under the protection of the Ministry of Culture.
