The French Cannons

Audio Guide

Down to the parking area from the Martyrs’ Memorial and following the path into Morto Bay, French cannons can be seen on the right. Hisarlik Hill was used as the French zone during the landing at Morto Bay on April 25, 1915. The French artillery batteries formed with naval and land guns fired, the first shots at the battles in June.

The French howitzers La Demosielle and Cropuillard, known by Turkish soldiers as “the Black Cat”, were used at the Sedd el Bahr Front particularly at the Kerevizdere and Gully Ravine Battles. They inflicted heavy damage and casualties on Turkish forces, and were effective in battle. While evacuating the peninsula, the French rendered these cannons ineffective and left them at their current positions. The following is inscribed on the monolith in front of the French cannons at the region of the Martyrs’ Memorial: The French have accessed this point during the wars that took place. They left these cannons here and returned. After leaving the Cape Helles Memorial over the Gözcübaba Hill, visitors proceed by turning left. When you go 100 m on the right of the road, after almost 1 km you will see the two French cannons in a woodland.
